From a Pizza Counter to Diamonds: The Story Behind MaMél Lux
By Melisa Kulla
In 2018, I landed in New York City with a suitcase, a heart full of hope, and a quiet promise to myself: somehow, I would build something meaningful here.
I didn’t know exactly how. I didn’t have connections, a roadmap, or a family legacy in the industry. What I had was determination, the kind that keeps you moving even when the path ahead feels uncertain.
My very first job in New York was as a cashier in a small pizza shop on 1st avenue in Manhattan.
(Me at the age of 20.)It wasn’t glamorous. I stood behind the counter for hours, taking orders, ringing up slices, wiping tables. But every time the door opened and the noise of the city rushed in, I would look outside and think: One day, I will find my place in this city.
New York has a way of humbling you before it lifts you.
The first few years were not easy. I worked every job I could find just to keep going. I was a cashier, a waitress, a bartender, and a dental assistant. Many days I worked two or even three jobs at the same time, waking up early, finishing after midnight, running from one shift to the next.
Most nights I was exhausted beyond words. Nights when the subway ride home felt longer than usual, when I questioned if I was strong enough to keep going.
But deep inside, there was always a small voice reminding me why I came here.
I came for opportunity.
I came for growth.
I came to build something of my own.
And then one night, something happened that would change my life in a way I could never have predicted.
I was working as a waitress, serving a table during a busy shift. Just another night, just another table or so I thought.
At that table sat former bosses who remembered me. We spoke for a moment, catching up in the middle of the chaos of the restaurant.
Then they asked me a simple question:
“Have you ever thought about selling jewelry?”
They told me about an opportunity in the Diamond District.
At that moment, I had no idea that this small conversation would become the turning point of my life.
My work as a waitress continued for another four months, during which I networked with guests who were actually wholesalers. These connections eventually evolved into mutually beneficial business opportunities.
Because YOUR NETWORK IS YOUR NET WORTH!
The Diamond District on 47th Street is unlike any other place in the world. It’s a universe filled with light reflecting from gemstones, with generations of craftsmanship, ambition, and dreams passing from one hand to another.
I stepped into that world eager to learn.
I learned about diamonds, gemstones, craftsmanship, custom designs but more importantly, I learned about the emotions behind jewelry.
A ring isn’t just gold and diamonds.
It’s the moment someone asks the love of their life to marry them.
It’s a promise between two people.
It’s a memory that lasts forever.
The deeper I got into the industry, the more I fell in love with it.
After gaining valuable experience, I joined a larger company with a strong influence in the jewelry industry.
There, I grew quickly.
I stepped into the role of sales manager and led a team of 30 people. The company specialized in hip-hop jewelry—bold statement pieces that defined both the culture and the market.

(Custom made gold chain and pendant set with natural diamonds for DJ Pauly D.)
But inside me, another vision was growing.
I wanted to create something different, something elegant, emotional, and deeply personal.
I began developing a women’s jewelry line, bringing a softer and more intimate side of design into the company.
Over time, my passion found its direction.
My niche became custom jewelry and bridal pieces, especially engagement rings.
There is something incredibly powerful about sitting with a couple who are about to begin their lives together and helping them design a ring that represents their story.
Every diamond I placed, every design I helped create, reminded me that jewelry is beyond beauty.
It’s about love.
It’s about milestones.
It’s about memories.
But the more I learned, the more a dream began to grow inside me.
I didn’t just want to sell jewelry.
I wanted to create my own world of jewelry.
I wanted to design pieces that carried meaning. Pieces that felt like they had soul behind them. Pieces that reflected the resilience and beauty of the journey that brought me here.
That dream became MaMél Lux.

MaMél Lux was born in New York, the city that challenged me, shaped me, and taught me how strong I could be.
Every piece we create carries that spirit.
I work closely with master craftsmen and artisans here in New York City, transforming precious metals and gemstones into designs meant to last generations.
When someone wears a piece of MaMél Lux, it becomes part of their story.
And sometimes, when I step back and look at where this journey began, I think about that girl standing behind the pizza counter, watching the world rush past the window.
She had no idea that one day she would build a jewelry brand in the heart of Manhattan.
But she believed.
She believed that hard work matters.
She believed that dreams are worth chasing.
She believed that even the smallest opportunity can change everything.
And she was right.
Life can change in a single moment a conversation, an opportunity, a decision to say yes when the door opens.
My journey is proof of that.
This story isn’t just about jewelry.
From a pizza shop counter…
To the Diamond District…
To building MaMél Lux.
It’s about courage.
It’s about persistence.
It’s about believing in a dream before the world can see it.
And this is only the beginning.
